Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) Assistance

The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system helps organize library materials by subject. Use this guide to understand how books are classified in our library.

Understanding the DDC System

The Dewey Decimal Classification system divides all knowledge into 10 main classes, each assigned a range of 100 numbers. These main classes are further divided into more specific subjects.

Each book in our library has a DDC number on its spine label. This number helps you locate the book on the shelf and indicates its subject matter.

Cracking the Dewey Code

Each Dewey Decimal number is like a secret message that tells you exactly where to find knowledge treasures in our library.

973.91
900 History 970 North America 973 United States

Dewey numbers are read like a treasure map - each digit takes you deeper into the knowledge forest. The first number shows the main category, and each following number narrows down the subject.

  • First digit (9): 900s - History & Geography
  • Second digit (7): 970 - History of North America
  • Third digit (3): 973 - History of the United States
  • Decimal (.91): 973.91 - U.S. History during the Great Depression

The numbers after the decimal point are like precise coordinates on our knowledge map. Books are arranged in perfect numerical order, so you can browse nearby numbers to discover related treasures.

Dewey Decimal Mysteries Solved

Answers to your most curious questions about our library's organization system:

Why does the library use the Dewey Decimal System?

The Dewey Decimal Classification is like the magical language of libraries worldwide. Created by Melvil Dewey in 1876, it provides a consistent, logical way to organize books by subject, making it easier for knowledge seekers to find materials on similar topics grouped together. It's our library's version of a well-organized spice bazaar!

What if I can't find a book with the DDC number?

Even the best treasure maps sometimes need interpretation! If you're having trouble locating a book, please ask our friendly library guides for assistance. The book might be on an adventure (checked out), hiding behind another book (misshelved), or we may need to update our treasure catalog. We're always happy to help you in your quest!

Are all books in the library classified with DDC ?

Most nonfiction books use the Dewey Decimal System, but we have special sections too! Fiction books (novels, short stories) are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name in our Storyteller's Grove. Reference materials live in the Wisdom Vault, periodicals in the News Garden, and special collections have their own magical organization systems.

How are books about Zanzibar classified?

Books about our beautiful islands are precious gems in our collection! Those specifically about Zanzibar's history, geography, or culture often have numbers starting with 916.78 (Geography) or 967.8 (History). We also have a special Spice Islands Heritage section where many Zanzibar-specific treasures are kept, including rare manuscripts and local publications.
